looks like a blown head gasket at the front cylinder.
Is it just the picture or is there an inordinate amount of sludge in that engine???

I would guess that since the front piston is lighter in color, And the thread is on steam engines. I would guess a head gasket or worse was letting water into cylinder?

Yes it's a blown head gasket, right hand side only but both heads to be sorted I believe, hopefully that piston and wall's OK. I also thought that oil looked sludgy...

Time to have a thorough purge Martin and put in 5W40 to cope with the Swiss temps.

By taking the heads off, because of steaming exhaust, we discovered that three bolts were not thight at the lower front of the right side. Therefore water nearly managed to clean the first cylinder.
Now we wait for the redone heads and the new gasket. In 10 days all is ready to ride again...

Good news and a lesson in checking our bolts every year.
