Duh.

You simply place an even bigger magnet on top of the motor to pull them back up into place. In fact, one could use an electromagnet wired to come on when you turn the key with a rheostat to adjust the strength of pull, allowing you to adjust the size of motor pieces you wanted to pull back up into place.

You're making this waaaay too complicated.

You guys are right , I've got an earth magnet that even at 2" x 3/4" x 1/4" is so strong that I can't pull it off the side of the refridgerator without hitting it to the edge and knocking it off with the rubber mallet.

I'm worried tho' that I'd never get it off the pan but hang on! if it turns out to be the pick-up tube I could just slap that ole magnet on and keep it there - any other pieces would just gang up too! The oil filter will take care of things that get past - won't it?

Someone's a genius around here and I'm not putting myself up for nomination!

Now I think about it, that mechanic always had me cleaning car engines with gasoline before he pulled them apart - until one day when I was cleaning and he was oxy-acetylene welding about 20 feet way!

We emptied a load of extinguishers that day!

I shouldn't be laughing but the visual I have of the two of you emptying fire extinguishers is just priceless! Keep us posted-BTW the curiosity got the best of us-we tapped on Bills oil pan and we don't hear or feel anything!!

I use one of those earth magnets on the bottom of my oil filter .

Me too...tapped Saturday on my BB bike pan and the guys at the shop thought I was cookoo...I stated that it was NOT my idea!!

At the time we were not laughing as there was a line of flame running from under one customer's car to under another!

Fortunately no bodywork issues - tough paint and very little plastic exposed in the early Seventies - each customer got a free valet that long day.

Well, it's getting official now, the IPTC - The International Pan Tapping Club has just evolved.

Membership is free but limited to V8bikers/trikers and initiation just requires you conduct a secretive pan tap or 2. Preferably when no-one's looking.

Looks like Bill and I are official members

I think we should have decals made with the INTERNATIONAL PAN TAPPERS ASSOCIATION logo on them. They could be applied to the pan itself. Maybe under the main logo in small print it could say "a higher standard of maintenance" or something like that. I bet LaFong could help with this.

Sounds like there will soon be a need for yet another organization - PPA - Pan Pounders Anonymous. Note this derivation from 'tapping' to 'pounding' is necessary for two reasons. 1) full blown addiction will likely lead to more severe efforts to attain fulfillment and thus tapping will no longer scratch the itch and 2) PTA is already taken and I don't think it wise to confuse the education supporters with an unruly bunch of pan pounders.

Yet ANOTHER phrase i never thought I would hear ...

It may sound silly but I am constantly wiggling , shaking and yes even tapping on my bikes components each time I am wiping down or washing my bike and I have discovered a few potential problems before they happen and correct the potential problem . I've learned over the years you can't just ride the shit out of your bike not expect a problem now and then unless you stay on top things .
