This is all good news, but Jack raises an interesting point - any ideas how much such a bill would be? and who pays? Insurance?

In the UK the Government pays (from our taxes of course so we pay it originally) but still it's not a thought that crosses our minds when the ambulance carts us off, luckily.

Sad story , a friend of mine got in a motorcycle accident a couple of years ago and spent about a month in the hospital and his bill was about $174000.00 . He was a Vietnam vet and had no insurance other than what they offer veterans . Normally he went to the vets hospital if he had a problem but he was unconscious and the took him to a local hospital. The vets insurance wouldn't pay the bill because he had a alcohol in his blood stream so they wouldn't pay bill . He was beside himself and very depressed about the whole thing because there was no way he could pay the bill and he committed suicide via a shotgun . Like I said , sad story .

Our medical system is in dire need of cost controls.

About 5 years ago, a paramotor buddy had a horrific crash while flying a paraglider. Truly amazing that he survived; two broken legs, both arms broken, shattered pelvis, neurological damage and so on. He was in ICU with numerous surgeries during the first 5 weeks. After that, he was in a rehab hospital and on a feeding tube for the next 5 months. During the 5th month, he got on solid food. At the 6th month, they told him he had exceeded his $2 million insurance lifetime benefit and released him. That is right, over $11,000 per day.

I can see the high cost for the first 5 weeks, but after that, he was on a morphine drip and got a couple of cans of ensure a day. His helicopter ride to the hospital was over $14,000.

In all too many cases the cost billed to the patient (or their insurance company) bears no real-world relationship to actual costs plus a reasonable markup. This is not unique to the US; the three most expensive hospitals I have ever seen in terms of cosmically excessive billing are all non-US hospitals.

I hope Harold keeps on the mend!

Very saddening news,

We have lost a true American patriot and a gentleman’s gentleman. There are very few like Harold and I was glad to know him. He will be missed.

David and Deidra.
