Avon versus Metzeler 300 Rear Tire

Post by mmaupin »

It is time for me to change the rear tire again. I have found the Avon 300/35VR18 to be short lived. The tread seems to wear out fast and they are prone to center tire bulging. All of that without any real serious burn outs.

Anyone running a Metzeler ME880 Marathon 300/35R18 Rear Tire? Thoughts?

Any other suggestions?
Regards,

Mark

I ran the Metzler 300 series rear tire on my small Block Bike. Within 500 miles the sidewalls cracked. I took it to the Metzler tent at Daytona during Bike week and was told that the tires were not designed to handle the weight of "That Beast" and that they would do nothing for me. I am back to running the Avon. It was NOT the 888 series BUT with that kind of "Customer Service" Attitude, I will not risk it.

I DO have the 888 on the front and have nothing negative to say about it. It is Quiet, Seems to be wearing well and very stable.
Who says building a border wall won't work?!? The Chinese built one over 2000 years ago and they STILL don't have any Mexicans ...

I have been running Metzler 280 -18 on my SB and usually get about 4000 miles out of them . I am now running a 260 -18 Metzler and I think it is wearing a little better but I still think it will need to be replaced at about 4000 .

I run the Metzler on the front and the Avon on the rear. I get about 4000 to 5000 on the Avon. Metzler even longer but I usually change both at once.

i ran the me-880 300 and the Avon 300, the me-880 for me was a better tire and more grip / longer lasting, one note, even though both the tires were 300's the me-880 was just a bit wider, though both were the same aspect ratio.
with a bit of persuasion with a grinder on both sides it did fit. the metzeler has a small flat edge on both sides of the tire where the avon did not.
got to wondering how much was left after the persuasion with a grinder i cut a sample patch out of the side wall of a used me-880,, there was no issue to worry about.
just something to look at if have the room before you switch.

Darryl,

Thanks! I do have a good 1/2" between the Avon and the fender. Do you think that is enough for the Metzeler 300 to fit?

Mark

I ran the Metzeler 300 on my 09 LS3 once after the Avon was worn out at about 4,500 miles, only to have the Metzeler worn out at 3,700 miles. I'm Back to the Avon.
