Wheel bearings

Post by Sonny »

Are the front and rear wheel bearings for an '09 SB specific for the Boss Hoss or are they the same as what HD uses and if so do you have a HD part # for the front and rears? Thanks.

Front bearings should be harley OEM part number 9247, I have used them several times. The rear I do not have sealed bearings so I have no experience with. Posts I have found say rears are difficult to find but 2 possible numbers were mentioned RLS10 AS and RLS - 10RS. I do not know if those are correct but are the numbers I found in my search.

From my notes when I changed wheel bearings a couple of years ago on my 03 SB:

"Rear = RLS10-2RS Dimensions: ID =31.750mm OD =69.850mm Width =17.463mm
Front = 1013-2RS-1” Dimensions: ID=1” OD=52MM, Thickness 21MM
Front Bearing appears to be a “All Balls 20-1017-2RS”
Bought front bearings on Ebay from http://www.oemcycle.com $57.06 for 4 bearings incl. freight
Bought rear bearings from LocateBearings 800 409 3632 Bought SKFs at $26.43 ea."

Remember the front bearings are particularly interesting to get out of the wheel. Ended up welding a nut to the bearing to be able to drive it out.
Regards,

Mark

Just a quick note about getting your wheel bearings out easy. Drill a 5/16 hole through your spacer tube about 3/4 inch from the end and that way you can use a punch to drive it out easily. also I replace the cheap single row ball bearings you get from Harley with a double row ball bearing that is metric and a lot easer to get. The problem is you have to turn the axle down 1mm so the bearings fit. Not a big deal at all and they work awesome and a lot safer. I also did that to my rear hub. The bearings are twice the size in width now.

Good idea. I just replaced the front and rear tires on my bike and the bearings were smooth and quiet so I decided to leave well enough alone and not change them.

To replace the front wheel bearings remove the rotors and take the bolts out of the hub, it splits in half and you can tap them out with a punch and small hammer from the inside out
