Fuel pump advice needed.
Seem to have a problem with my fuel pump, the bike cut out and the glass inline filter after the pump was dry. The tank and pipes are free from blockage.
Once I got home and left the bike, the filter filled up again.
Have taken the pipe off and switched ignition on and it pumped 2 gallons out without any problem.
I want to change the pump, but what type/ rating?
What psi and gallons per minute do I need?
Bike is a 5 litre Kannon with a 4 barrel Holley.
Any help appreciated.

Re: Fuel pump advice needed.
Had 2 Holley Red fuel pumps crap out on me over the past few years so just recently switched to the fuel pump NAPA sells and it works fine so far . I was told that Mountain Boss Hoss uses this NAPA fuel pump on all their carbed bikes now .

Re: Fuel pump advice needed.
Steve,
i have no knowledge of Kannon,,, however,,, on the Q-jet if i remember others saying 5-6lbs pressure. i went from stock fuel pump to Holley Red and it lasted about 1 year. i replaced with another and it was trouble free till i sold the bike.
Also i do remember some members saying to not use the glass filter due to it's quality or lack thereof.
Also, some with Hotter Motors run a Holley black pump which is higher pressure and then need to run a regulator.
Hope this helps.
Darryl

Isn't it possible to run a mechanical fuel pump on a Kannon ? If it is I would go that route .

Hi Steve,
My '01 BH small block uses an AirTex E8012S electric fuel pump.
I have replaced it a few times since the bike was new.
It is available from O'Reilly's Auto Parts stores over here.
Google it if you'd like.
Maybe you can find it there.
If not, I would not mind getting one and shipping it to you.

Re: Fuel pump advice needed.
Follow up on Jack's recommendation. I have a mechanical on my V8Chopper. Had it on the other two choppers also. Had three different failures with Holley and Carter electric pumps on my old Boss Hosses.
Edelbrock makes some high performance mechanical pumps that work great, bullet proof and are even chromed. Some are high enough capacity to accommodate not only carb but nitrous system as well. It will require a regulator for the Edelbrock carb.
Although there are numerous reliable electric pumps out there, including the NAPA pump I've heard good things about, the old saying goes; "if it has tits, tires, or wires, it's going to give you trouble".

I have a 540 with up to 300hp shot of NOS. I run a Holly Black with a regulator. The only issue I've had is when it's hot outside and the engine is hot (normal hot) I sometimes have an issue with pressure drops. After speaking with Curtis at Texas Boss Hoss I'm told this problem is not uncommon and derives from the lines coming from the tank not being able to keep up with demand. The fix is to install an additional pump between the tank and the main pump. Contact Curtis for any other details as he is the Man!

I have a Race Pumps system on my bike. http://www.racepumps.com/
Works great, but a bit pricey and I had to dimple the frame to make it fit

CLF...I've considered the race pump but since it was labeled as "racing" I was concerned on reliability. Seems you may have sparked my interest in it again.

Re: Fuel pump advice needed.
Dam it , I should have dimpled my frame for the mechanical fuel pump while I had the frame split for my frame /neck reenforcement and motor mounts relocation . Would have been a perfect time to do it considering it could have been dimpled , welded and repainted along with the other mods . Oh well , the NAPA electric pump set up has been working well .
Re: Fuel pump advice needed.
I'm wondering if you have to dimple the frame on a Big Block bike for the mechanical pump? Do they go on the identical spot on the engine block?
I believe that the BB frame differs a little from the SB frame.

Re: Fuel pump advice needed.
Ric, unless your block is the latest Gen, or a Donovan, it doesn't have a mechanical pump boss on the side.

Re: Fuel pump advice needed.
YES I did! Thank You Very much I apologize that I neglected to reply to your PM yesterday. Glad the money made it. I figured that with the two sheets of paper I used it would be well hidden.
This unit IS much smaller than the the Holley and dare I say even the carter I have on it now.
I hear the Carter loud some days and quiet the next so i am sure it isn't long for this world. Happy to have the replacement part already on the shelf. When I add my lower HID Projector fog lamps and do the re-wire in a month I will swap that out too. In the meantime, I will enjoy riding around in this 70 degree clear weather
I now return you to the thread already in progress ...
