You should see a small vent pipe just below the cap it runs down and throught the bottom of the tank and connects to a hose. I would guess your oil pump pickup tube has fallen off. You can drain the oil and stick a piece of wire or something in the drain hole and probably rattle it around too. I installed an adjustable fan switch many years ago. It costs more and more complicated to install, but you get the setting you want. I have heard of many of the preset ones being different than the specifications.

Later transmission do not have that elbow anymore, the bikes with gear indicators have a new design connector.
